Understanding the Different Types and Cases of Malignant Mesothelioma
You probably have heard about malignant mesothelioma, but do you understand what it means or what it is all about?
Mesothelium is the thin layer lining in internal organ.
When we are talking about mesothelioma and malignant, it is most likely about a cancerous form happening on the mesothelium.
Malignant means serious, severe, or deadly meaning that we will be talking about a severe cancerous form development taking place on the inside line of the internal organs.
Malignant Mesothelioma and Understanding the Facts
Before getting to the deeper end of malignant mesothelioma, lets talk about the different variants of mesothelioma.
It is divided into three major variants: pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial.
Pleural refers to the lungs inner lining or pleura so the cancerous cells are growing inside the lungs.
Peritoneum is the abdomen inner lining so it is happening to the stomach.
Pericardium is the heart inner lining or the pericardium.
Depending on the location of the cancerous cells, the case is considered severe when it has reached a higher stage.
When you are able to detect the problem as early as possible, around 80% of cure and recovery can be achieved.
Unfortunately, the early stage doesnt show signs so people tend to neglect it.
The symptoms start appearing when the issue has reached a higher stage which means that the cancerous cells may likely have expanded and grown to other organs and areas. In this stage, cure is less than 14%.
Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
This is one of the most popular cases of malignant mesothelioma. Around 70% of mesothelioma cases are happening in the lungs.
The cancerous cells develop and grow on the membrane, surrounding the lungs and chest cavity.
Since it is one of the most popular cases, many researches have been done on this subject.
Thats why it has more possible treatments when compared to the other types.
Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Around 20% cases of mesothelioma are about the cancerous cells found within the abdomen, to be exact, the abdominal cavity lining.
The possible treatment is quite limited but a new therapy has been found.
Statistics show that it shows positive result with increased success in treating patients with peritoneal issue.
With HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), the chance of survival and cure is quite big.
Malignant Pericardial Mesothelioma
This is the rarest type of malignant mesothelioma with only 1% of cases. This problem can happen to younger people and the treatment is still rare.
You need to talk to your doctor about the treatment options. Surgery is one of the possible treatments, often followed with removal of the affected areas.
It means that it is possible that doctor will remove the pericardium, peritoneum, or pleura of your body.
It is also possible to have chemotherapy, which can stand on its own or used in accompaniment with the surgery.
Often times, doctor may suggest chemotherapy after the surgery, meant to kill the remaining cells.
And then there is radiation that is designed to shrink the tumors as well as preventing the spread of the cancerous cells.
Depending on your condition and the severity of the problem, you need to talk it out with your doctor.
There is always hope when dealing with malignant mesothelioma, no matter how complicated it is.
